New Traffic Signal Activated at 51st Avenue and Pinnacle Peak Road

Dec. 20, 2011

Traffic Light ImageThe city of Phoenix will activate a new traffic signal at the intersection of 51st Avenue and Pinnacle Peak Road on Wednesday, Dec. 21.  The city’s Street Transportation Department began the installation process in October and the signal’s activation this month is ahead of schedule and in advance of a major street project scheduled for fiscal year 2012-13.

The project was first initiated by calls from a neighborhood leader concerned about increased traffic in the area.  With a new Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints temple being constructed, even more traffic is anticipated, making the neighbors anxious about safety issues.  There are 2,000 vehicles per day on 51st Avenue at that intersection entering the neighborhood and 15,600 vehicles on Pinnacle Peak Road.

“Neighborhood safety is a priority for me and my constituents,” said Vice Mayor Thelda Williams, who represents the area.  “The left-turn, southbound to eastbound, makes it safer for drivers exiting the adjacent neighborhood.

The traffic signal cost approximately $175,000 and was jointly funded by the city and the LDS church.
