The artist worked with elementary students at Wilson Elementary, an arts-magnet school that was displaced by expansion at Sky Harbor Airport, to create a ceramic mural that was designed, fabricated, and installed by the artist and the students.

Travel often brings thoughts of excitement, adventure, and wonder. As one rushes to catch a flight or pick up a bag in baggage claim, these thoughts are often pushed to the side. In an attempt to bring people back to the wonder of visiting new places, The Woman of Nature presents a dreamlike approach to travel.

Martha Heavenston’s ceramic mural combines poetry with an image of a woman dreaming about travel. Working with students from Wilson Elementary, Heavenston asked the students to write poetry to be included in the artwork. The mural is made of bright colors with a fluid illustration of a woman looking up towards the sky. Between the objects represented in the mural is prose, written in both Spanish and English, to accompany her look of awe.
