7TH AVENUE STREETSCAPE TEMPORARY PUBLIC ART PROJECT CALL TO ARIZONA ARTISTS & POETS - DEADLINE:
October 4, 2010 for poetry submissions
October 11, 2010 for visual art submissions

      BACKGROUND
The Phoenix Office of Cultural Affairs is looking for Arizona artists and poets to feature as part of the annual 7th Avenue Streetscape exhibition. This is open only to Arizona artists and poets who have not received a City of Phoenix public art commission. Two-dimensional artwork from up to three artists will be selected for display in the art panels at 7th Avenue and Glenrosa Street. Poems from up to three Arizona poets will also be selected for display as part of this popular outdoor gallery. The artwork and poems will be on display for approximately one year.

      PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Artists should submit images of original artwork for consideration. Selected works will be enlarged and displayed on three double-sided translucent Lexan panels at the 7th Avenue and Glenrosa site. The panels will display artwork on one side and poetry on the other. The panels are approximately 5'6" h x 7'10" w, and backlit for vivid nighttime display. This outdoor gallery has become a highly visible cornerstone of revitalization efforts along 7th Avenue, and a place for the community to gather and see the finest examples of works from Arizona artists. Combining visual art and poetry will turn the gallery into a "street book" worth stopping to read.

The Office of Cultural Affairs encourages interested artists and poets to visit the site at 7th Avenue and Glenrosa to view the current art panels. A project description is also available here.

Up to three poems and three images will be selected, each by a different artist and poet. Artists will be responsible for submitting art and poetry that can be readily reproduced using standard sign technology. The Office of Cultural Affairs will purchase reproduction rights, not the original works. The city will retain exclusive rights to reproduce the art and poetry on the Lexan panels and to document the project for promotional and educational purposes. A graphic designer will be hired to design the background and font design for each poem.

      ELIGIBILITY
This project is open to all Arizona visual artists and poets who have not previously been awarded public art commissions by the City of Phoenix. City of Phoenix staff and family members of the Cultural Affairs staff, and selection panelists and their family members, are excluded from applying for this project. This project is ideal for artists who work in two-dimensional media such as painting, printmaking and photography, and poetry that fits on a single, landscape-format page.

      ESTIMATED BUDGET
$900 will be awarded to each artist and poet selected. The Phoenix Office of Cultural Affairs will fund the cost of enlarging and installing the works on the display panels.

      SELECTION PROCESS
The artists and poets for this project will be chosen by a selection panel that includes artists, arts professionals, community representatives and a staff member from the funding department. There may also be non-voting advisors on the panel. The Public Art Program staff facilitates the selection process, but does not vote. The final recommendation of the selection panel must be approved by The Phoenix Arts and Culture Commission and the Phoenix City Council prior to the award of contract. The applicant pool compiled in response to this call may be used for other public art opportunities as deemed appropriate by the Phoenix Office of Cultural Affairs.
