CALLS TO ARTISTS

RFQ North Carolina’s African American Music Trail Bandstand Canopy
The Kinston Community Council for the Arts (KCCA) seeks to commission an artist, artist team, or designer to create a site-specific, outdoor bandstand canopy which provides functional shelter for performers and interprets, commemorates, and celebrates the African American musical history, heritage, and culture of Eastern North Carolina, in particular the City of Kinston and Lenoir County. The commissioned artist will design and produce an artful canopy enhancement to be installed on an existing, unsheltered bandstand in Pearson Park (formerly Neuseway Park), overlooking the Neuse River in downtown Kinston, NC.

This public art and design project will be a prominent component of the African American Music Trail (AAMT), a creative economies initiative of the NC Arts Council, an agency of the NC Department of Cultural Resources, in partnership with the KCCA, the Golden Leaf Foundation, the NC Department of Transportation, and local arts councils, government agencies, musicians, and community stakeholders. The Pearson Park bandstand component of the AAMT is funded by a grant from the Golden Leaf Foundation.

Please note: This RFQ is one of two concurrent public art calls to artists related to the African American Music Trail in Kinston, but commissioned by two different agencies. This Kinston Community Council for the Arts RFQ refers only to the Pearson Park ( formerly Neuseway Park) bandstand project, not to the separate All-America Park RFQ, which is under the auspices of the North Carolina Arts Council. Artists may apply to both RFQs, but separate applications are required.

Budget is $65,000. Deadline is September 1, 2010. For more information contact Sandy Landis - slandis@kinstoncca.com or Matt Amante – mattamante@hotmail.com.

RFQ Design & Artistic Programming of Catholic Shelter in Saint Paul: Sept 10
Catholic Charities of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, in partnership with Public Art Saint Paul and the Saint Paul Design Center landscape, is seeking an artist to develop a proposal for the design and artistic programming of the Dorothy Day Center in downtown Saint Paul. During 2010 the artist will immerse in the Center to gain understanding the mission, function, service and clientele of Catholic Charities Dorothy Day Center; explore the landscape and its relationship to the Dorothy Day facility and use by Dorothy Day clients and its place in the larger urban context at this critical downtown gateway site The artist will submit a proposal for the Dorothy Day landscape and its artistic programming based upon insights gleaned from this in-depth exploration. The proposal may include design of the shape and form of the land, amenities and expressive/interpretive elements in multiple media (including text and sound) integrated into the site, and provision for artistic programming.

The Dorothy Day Center provides drop-in services during the day and overnight shelter for individuals experiencing homelessness. Dorothy Day provides a hospitable environment while upholding the dignity of homeless people. The Center alleviates the immediate suffering for those experiencing homelessness and provides resources to help individuals and families move toward self-sufficiency. Services include hot meals served by volunteers, a food shelf, mental health services and medical care, including optometry and chiropractic care. Importantly, Catholic Charities Housing First Outreach staff help homeless individuals move from the Dorothy Day Center into permanent housing. Dorothy Day’s overnight emergency shelter provides shelter housing to 150 homeless adults. Most nights, about 200 people sleep on mats on the first floor.Dorothy Day’s Women's Shelter, located on the second floor, offers a 24-hour shelter with 42 beds and supportive services to help women address their individual barriers to housing.

Support for this initiative has been provided by the City of Saint Paul’s Cultural STAR program as Phase 1 of what is envisioned as a comprehensive initiative that will fund and implement the artist’s proposal in Phase 2. $25,000 will be available for the artist’s in depth exploration of the Dorothy Day Center and its urban context and for the artist’s design and proposal in Phase 1. Additional funding may be available in Phase 1 to implement a demonstration project based upon the proposal.

It is open to artists nationwide, however, the project budget’s capacity to underwrite travel and living expenses is very modest.

Interested artists must submit the online application at: www.surveymonkey.com/s/dorothyday.
